Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre Residency: Redefining and Reclaiming Space in Conflict Zones

A lecture demonstration by Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre Artistic Director Samar Haddad King and Associate Artistic Director Zoe Rabinowitz. They share methods the company has developed to create art across physical and political barriers, and the impact of working with disenfranchised communities on creative projects. Based on their work between the US and on both sides of the Green Line in Palestine for close to a decade, the presentation features video footage from the creative process, source materials, and performance excerpts, as well as an opportunity for discussion with the audience. The Middlebury College Dance Program seeks to develop the creative artist and artist/scholar through critical study and regular practice in contemporary, world dance techniques; improvisation and choreography; history, theory, and cultural studies; experiential anatomy and kinesiology; and performance. Along with classes, the Middlebury Dance Program hosts a series of master classes and workshops that are free and open to the public. Artists are brought in from all over the world to share their perspective and put into practice the notion that Movement Matters.
