NACHMO 2021 Challenge

The January Challenge is the foundation to all that is NACHMO. It is our annual challenge to inspire dancers, choreographers, and movement enthusiasts to choreograph by providing a month-long deadline to complete their work and connect it to a community of peers.

For one month each year, we put aside our excuses, our hesitations, and perhaps our day jobs to work intensely on making dance. Through the online community of fellow NACHMO participants, social media, the blog, and live events, we provide opportunities for individual artists to network and collaborate.

January 2020 is your choreographic kick in the pants!

Together, as the Vermont Dance Alliance, we will create a cohort of VDA choreographers to engage in NACHMO as a community! For accountability, inspiration, support, connection and outside eyes throughout your process.

After you have registered on the NACHMO site, please email marychrisdebelina@gmail.com by January 3rd to be added to the VDA cohort! The group will be able to be in touch with each other throughout the process, with one online gathering mid-process, and one end of the month informal showing to share your final pieces with each other.

Throughout the process, in your daily posts on social media, tag @vermontdance and using the #vdaalltheway so we can all follow your work!

Mary Chris DeBelina’s focus since 2008 has been primarily teaching children creative dance and raising her growing family. MC studied Biology and Dance at Dartmouth College (B.A. 2005) and combined her two passions at Sarah Lawrence College receiving an MFA in Dance (2008). Her thesis work focused on the links between science and art. Mary Chris founded the Hopkins Center’s Children’s Creative Dance Program at Dartmouth in 2005 and taught every class until 2012 when her family relocated to Philadelphia. As a faculty member at Dartmouth she was fortunate to perform with, and choreograph for, the Dartmouth Dance Theater Ensemble and she was a frequent guest teacher in the advanced modern dance classes. In Philadelphia, MC met Keila Cordova and was introduced to Dance for PD. She attended the Teacher Training Workshop in Brooklyn in 2013, taught classes in Philadelphia and is excited to be teaching at MSAC this fall. Now in Vermont, MC teaches at The Everything Space and Contemporary Dance & Fitness Studio. She dances with Willow Wonder, Isadora Snapp and Hannah Dennison. MC also tries to find time to make her own work. Mary Chris finds dance in everything and currently her biggest inspirations are her four children.
