Kathak, Classical Indian Dance Lec/ Dem and Workshop

Discover the graceful and dynamic North Indian classical dance form of Kathak with this lecture demonstration and workshop.
We will cover a brief history of the dance form, development and today's expression. Along with an explanation and demonstration of the typical repertoire of Kathak.

The workshop will introduce the participant to the fundamentals of kathak dance including: Basic posture, pranam (greeting) tatkar and various step/footwork patterns, taal (rhythmic structures), padhant (the system of rhythmic oral recitation), hastaks (hand, arms and feet coordination), chakkars (spins) and abhinaya (expression). Elements of storytelling and music will be included.

Lecture on the main characteristics and differences on the eight Indian Classical Dance Forms (Bharatanatyan, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Sattriya, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam)

The workshop will introduce the participant to the fundamentals of indian dance aesthetics, including basic techniques as (Bhedas: Eyes, head, neck movement) and mudras (Single and double hand gestures) and its applications to pure dance (nritta) and expressive dance (nritya)

Veronica Simas de Souza Rosas
In great demand as a performer, choreographer, and instructor, Veronica has an innate ability to weave the subtle nuances and textures of eastern music into movement. She has a dance background that includes studies and performances in Middle Eastern, modern, and Latin dance forms, and trained intensively in Kathak with Padma Shri Sunayana Hazarilal. As an educator,
Veronica engages with diverse communities of learners at the highest levels of artistic endeavor and critical thinking.

SoBo is home to Adventures with Super Bee, presenting dance performances for kids in kid friendly spaces, and Change the Channel, an improv and sketch comedy troupe. Cyndal Ellis is Co-Director of SoBo Studio. She teaches fusion belly dance, modern dance, and Dunham Technique at SoBo and at schools throughout southern VT. In 2017, Cyndal received a Certification through the Institute for Dunham Technique Certification. She holds a B.A. in anthropology and dance from Smith College. She has over 20 years of dance experience. She has taught at Jacob’s Pillow, Smith College, Landmark College, and grade schools throughout New England. She was a member of The Sovereign Collective with which she performed and taught nationally. She was also one of the co-directors of Firekeeper Productions and toured the mulit-media production The Mabel Story throughout New England. Cyndal loves to share the joy of dance with people of all ages and abilities.
