Interwoven: A Workshop in Axis Syllabus and Contact Improvisation

Registration deadline: May 10th, by noon

The Axis Syllabus offers a groundswell of relevant and specific information into healthy movement habits for moving humans living in a dynamic world.

In this dance workshop, we will look at details of our own anatomy, refined over thousands of years of evolution, to gain clues about how to move in collaboration with our own fascinating design. As we grow in our kinetic potential, we can meet our dance partners with increased access to range and choice. This workshop will weave explorations of healthy and creative relationships between the many parts of our selves, with other humans in partner dancing, and within larger networks. We will identify boundaries and limitations as building blocks of resilience. We will explore ourselves and our shared dances as tensegrity structures, cultivating out integrity through tensile resistance. We will investigate the self within interconnected networks and interconnectivity within the self. And we’ll do a whole lot of dancing.

Morning Axis Syllabus classes will focus on increasing structural integrity and opportunity in our own movement patterns into and out of the floor. Afternoon Contact Improv classes will develop fluid and dynamic alignment in partnering situations as our resilient structures transform unexpected force into possibility and support.

The classes will be highly complementary and can also be taken separately.

The Axis Syllabus is a compendium of information from the study of anatomy, bio-mechanics, physics, and other related fields relevant to the moving body. In these dance classes we engage with anatomical clues in a quest to collaborate more deeply with the body's own inherited design. We seek to re-train movement patterns for respectful coherence and to grow our physical possibilities while learning and respecting our structural limitations.

Classes are open to all levels and students are encouraged to engage material at a pace and approach that preferences integration over ambition. A range of adaptations will be offered so learning can be supported for beginners and seasoned dancers simultaneously.

Daniel Bear Davis (MFA) is an interdisciplinary performance maker and movement educator. He has been teaching and dancing Contact Improvisation, Axis Syllabus, and improvisational composition for over half his life. He has taught in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and throughout North America. Whether teaching physical skills or compositional practices, his intention is to foster tools for informed choice and increased possibility. He has been blessed with opportunities to perform with Guillermo Gomez Peña, Nancy Stark Smith, Nita Little, Pipaluk Supernova/Live Art Installations, Felix Ruckert, Kira Kirsch, Erika Tsimbrovsky, Scott Wells, Cid Pearlman, and many other inspiring body/minds.
