The fourth annual Vermont Dance Alliance Gala will be presented at the Middlebury Town Hall Theater on April 24th & 25th featuring five VDA choreographers from throughout the state! In an effort to both advance the artists' works during their creation process, as well as gain momentum with Vermont audiences for the big performance, each year we offer a mid-process showing for the public. Join us on March 22nd for the Gala Works in Progress showing at 2pm, followed by a facilitated feedback conversation with Toby MacNutt! This years' Gala will feature works by Julie Peoples-Clark, Bridget Struthers, Elizabeth Kuryloe, Nicole Dagesse and Laurel Jenkins.

Participating artists

CHRISTAL BROWN (performer, choreographer, educator, activist, mother, disciple of Christ)  is the Founder of INSPIRIT, Project: BECOMING, the creator of the Liquid Strength training module for dance and the Chair of Dance and Faculty Director of MiddCORE at Middlebury College. Brown is a native of Kinston, North Carolina, where she remembers accompanying her mother to NAACP meetings and performing at Black Caucus rallies. This early exposure to social responsibility innately produced a strong desire in Brown to put her gifts to work for the good of the communities she inhabits.  Brown earned her BFA in Dance and minor in Business from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her MFA in New Media Art and technology from Long Island University. Browns professional journey has been shaped through working with and learning from icons such as Chuck Davis, Bill T. Jones, Andrea E. Woods, Liz Lerman, Blondell Cummings, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and Bebe Miller.

Born and raised in France, Elizabeth studied ballet, Russian character and modern dance in Paris. In the 80’s, she moved to New York City and study with Merce Cunningham, Viola Farber, Maggy Black. After 15 years hiatus to raise a family and work as a physical therapist, she returned to her former passion. Since, she danced with the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble in Hanover, NH and What’s Written Within in Edgartown, MA. She choreographed most of her work with the latter with productions for Built on Stilts, the Yard and the Hebrew Center in Martha’s Vineyard, and for the 2019 Vermont Dance Alliance Winter Gala . She is a passionate of baroque dance and performed with Ken Pierce Baroque group in Boston MA. My choreographies are the result of a close collaboration with the dancers. With them, and depending on their skills and abilities, I shape an initial concept into a finished product by using simple step phrases and modifying their patterns, directions, timing and speed, resulting in a multilayered composition. My motto? "Everyone can dance"

Elizabeth M. Seyler, PhD, is a dancer, writer/editor and instructor. Since 2002, she has specialized in dancing and teaching gender-neutral Argentine tango. Her latest love is loosely structured movement improvisation for play and performance. An assistant editor, writer and proofreader at Seven Days and a part-time tango instructor, she holds a PhD in dance from Temple University, an MEd from the University of Vermont, and a BA from Cornell University.

Choreographer and dancer Hanna Satterlee grew up in East Montpelier, Vermont and has spent many years traveling through dance, both nationally and internationally. Hanna has produced her own choreographic and dance installation work, and has performed with professional companies in Vienna Austria, Stolzenhagen Germany, Baltimore, Manhattan, Brooklyn, San Francisco and throughout the state of Vermont. In May 2017 Hanna founded the Vermont Dance Alliance, with a strong belief that the culture of dance will continue to flourish and expand throughout the edges of our beautiful state. Hanna serves as the Executive Director, both managing a statewide network of dance artists, partners and patrons, as well as producing and curating high-quality dance events and opportunities for the public. Hanna is as passionate for the form of dance as she is in connecting people to it. Hanna holds degrees and certifications in dance therapy, psychology, performance, choreography, vinyassa/yin/restorative yoga, non-profit management and arts integration. Hanna shares these passions as an intergenerational educator, interdisciplinary performer and collaborator, experimental curator and event producer. Jessie Owens is the founder of Ergo Movement, a collaborative performance project based in Burlington, Vermont. She holds a BA in Dance from Smith College, where she attended as an Ada Comstock, or non-traditional scholar. She is the current Vice President of the Vermont Dance Alliance, where she is working to support dance in all of its forms.

Julie Peoples-Clark, originally from Baltimore, MD, has been a go-go dancer in a cage in a night club, a showgirl in Atlantic City, a backup dancer for Richard Marx, a magician’s assistant, a teeny bopper in 3 John Waters’s films, a tap dancing book on television, creator of after-school dance programs for the Drug Enforcement Administration and a professional modern dancer. She moved to Vermont 12 Years ago with her husband Dave and daughter Ella. She is on the dance faculty at University of Vermont teaching contemporary, ballet, tap, musical theatre dance and pilates. She is part of Dance Tramp a collective of Vermont-based experimental dance artists. Most importantly, she is mother to Ella the Great and Emanuel Blessing.

Laurel Jenkins’ choreography emerges from rigorous experimentation and interdisciplinary dialogues in the realms of contemporary dance, opera, music and theater. She engages with the choreographic process as a radical space for reimagining our collective human experience. Her work has been presented by Lincoln Center, Disney Hall, REDCAT, Automata, the Getty Center, Show Box LA, Danspace, Berlin’s Performing Presence Festival, and Tokyo’s Sezane Gallery. She recently choreographed Bernstein’s MASS with the LA Phil and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. In addition, she has choreographed for LA Contemporary Dance Company, The Wooden Floor, California State University, Long Beach, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jenkins was a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2007-2012, and developed original roles in Brown’s final works. Jenkins also danced in New York with Vicky Shick and Sara Rudner. She performed the role of Ismene in Peter Sellars’ staging of Oedipus Rex conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. This spring she will perform solos by Merce Cunningham in Los Angeles as a part of the Night of 100 Solos: A Centennial Event. Jenkins is the recipient of a Vermont Arts Council Grant, an Asian Cultural Council Grant, holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence, and an MFA from UCLA....

Nicole Dagesse is a Vermont native whose rural upbringing in the forests and fields is a direct inspiration for her movement style and choreographic desires. Combining her training in Modern Dance, Contact Improvisation, and Aerial Dance, Nicole approaches each new site with inquisitive play and rigorous movement research. Nicole earned her BFA in Dance and BS in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she was immersed in the creativity of the local dance scene. Nicole cites Wire Monkey Dance as a major influence in her work. It was while playing on the scaffolding that her 3-dimensional movement patterns began to develop, and her love of partnering work took flight. After several years dancing in the Boston area, Nicole felt it was time to continue her dance education as an artist and teacher, and moved to Boulder, Co. to pursue an MFA in Site Dance and Somatic Practices. The rugged terrain and the endless blue skies provided the perfect opportunity to hone her voice as a site artist. The grounding and balancing study of the Alexander Technique was a necessary complement to her physically demanding work, and Nicole was increasingly interested...

I'm interested in: what defines a body? How do our bodies relate us - to each other, the world? My training and experience includes a wide breadth of contemporary, improvisational, and adaptive styles, with a childhood foundation in ballet, jazz, and modern dance. I have studied with integrated companies such as AXIS Dance, Stopgap, Candoco, as well as individual teachers, choreographers, and experienced performance mentors. My performance history ranges from yoga studios in small Vermont towns to Danspace St Mark's in New York City to festivals in the UK and Germany. I am available to teach - dance topics, adaptive strategies, and more; to perform; or to engage in the creation of new work.

The Middlebury College Dance Program seeks to develop the creative artist and artist/scholar through critical study and regular practice in contemporary, world dance techniques; improvisation and choreography; history, theory, and cultural studies; experiential anatomy and kinesiology; and performance. Along with classes, the Middlebury Dance Program hosts a series of master classes and workshops that are free and open to the public. Artists are brought in from all over the world to share their perspective and put into practice the notion that Movement Matters.
